Special Events - Civics 101

Civics 101

  • Can you name 2 of the 5 current county commissioners?
  • Who is the mayor of the town where you live?
  • Can Powell Bill funds be used to construct a gymnasium at local high school?
  • What percentage of your tax dollar goes to support the local school system?
  • Can a majority of a town board vote to remove a member who violates the town’s ethics policy?
  • How often can you be called for jury duty?

If you are able to answer all of these questions correctly, consider yourself a well-informed citizen. If you are unsure of some answers, we can help. The Union County League of Women Voters invites citizens to participate in the 2016 Civics 101 Class to learn the responsibilities and function of your local government. Citizens are most directly impacted by decisions made at the local level and they also have the greatest opportunity to influence those decisions when they know how to bring concerns to the attention of elected officials. Civics 101 will help newcomers and interested “old timers” become more familiar with how it all works and gain a “behind the scenes view” from people who have served. The series is highly engaging and interactive with weekly meetings of 2 ½ hours, field trips to board meetings and Q-A with local leaders. The league is excited to offer the program for the second year. It is open to all Union County residents. Registration fee of $25 covers materials and the reception at final meeting.

Get the inside scoop from this distinguished line of Presenters and Celebrity Guests:  Superior Court Judges David Lee and Chris Bragg, Board of Elections Director John Whitley, county staff and commissioners , former Senators Fern Shubert and Eddie Goodall,  Deputy Fire Marshall Jon Williams, Clerk of Court JR Rowell, Sheriff Eddie Cathey, former  BOE member David Scholl and more.
